There are still two days until Selena Gomez’s latest single, “Wolves,” will hit the airwaves, but some fans are convinced that they’ve already figured out what it’s going to be about. The “Fetish” singer announced the song last week and since then, Twitter has been abuzz with speculation that its title is a reference to something very personal to Selena: her battle with Lupus.
BuzzFeed (and a lot of people in the comments section of Selena’s social media feeds) points out that the word “wolf” in Latin is “lupus.” (A quick search on Google Translate confirms it.)
Selena went public with her battle with the disease in 2015. And over the summer she revealed in an emotional Instagram post that she received a kidney transplant from her friend Francia Raísa due to complications from the autoimmune condition. In the post, she hinted at wanting to share more about her journey with the disease, which she notes is still “very misunderstood.”
“I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you,” she captioned the photo from September 14. “Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery.” Could “Wolves” potentially be the “until then” that she was hinting at?
