How many Stan Lee cameos do Marvel have filmed? News of Stan Lee’s passinghas ripped through the pop culture world. The eponymous creator, one of the most important to pop culture full stop, has left his stamp and a piece of his legacy on so many people and creations they are impossible to count. In the latter years of his life, one of the most-loved running traditions involving the Spider-Man creator were his cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond.
Stan Lee has been appearing in Marvel-related movies for decades; as the MCU has gone from strength-to-strength, they’ve built up a small library of memorable jokes and nods featuring Stan. His scenes are a low-key selling point of the franchise, fans wondering where he’ll pop up with each release and ranking favorites (it hasn’t hurt Fox and Sony’s Marvel projects to have him involved either).
But now that the inevitable has happened and Stan Lee has left us, it begs the question: what will be his last appearance in the MCU? Marvel Studios, aware of his old age, had been shooting the cameos in groups, flying Lee in to film several of his scenes in one go. The result is that his latter-day appearances, such as his bus driver joke in Avengers: Infinity War, are a bit quicker and less flashy than some of his earlier ones, but the important part is that he was there, engaging in the universe.
The last set of cameos reported went all the way up to Avengers 4. This has been stated multiple times by both Lee’s agent and director Joe Russo, meaning that you can expect Stan Lee cameos in Captain Marvel and Avengers 4.
It’s unknown if Stan Lee shot a cameo for Spider-Man: Far From Home. This has never been mentioned in relation to previous shooting days, so quite possibly won’t feature a Stan Lee cameo, making it histhe first MCU feature without him. It would be sad for Spider-Man to swing on the big screen without his creator, but seeing as Avengers 4 is ostensibly the “end” of the MCU as we know it, with many original cast-members leaving and the whole project going through a rejig of sorts, it does have some degree of closure to it..
Aside from Marvel, it’s unknown if Fox has filmed any Stan Lee cameos for Dark Phoenix or New Mutants, their upcoming films set in the X-Men universe. Both finished principal photography months ago and are undergoing reshoots and post-production, so it’s entirely possible. Likewise, there’s been nothing from Sony Animation on Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, December’s multi-Spider-person animated adventure, either. Being animation, it’s definitely possible given that a voice-over is much easier to record.
Knowing that Stan Lee’s last Marvel cameos are coming will just make keeping an eye out for him in all these upcoming movies that much more special, but it’s going to make the final one especially hard.
