If the whole acting thing didn’t work out, it turns out that Kate Winslet had a back-up plan in place that would have seen her lead a very different life as a hairdresser.
That’s if it wasn’t for an incident when she was younger that lead to her actually cutting off a piece of a family friend’s ear, of course.
Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Winslet told the gruesome (yet also hilarious) tale of her ambition to be a hairdresser as a young girl, explaining how she started by cutting her own hair, before moving on to a family friend who, frankly, made some poor choices.
‘A family friend – who was a fully grown man, ladies and gentleman – allowed me to cut his hair… and I cut off a piece of his ear,’ Kate admitted.
Looking a bit embarrassed to be telling the story – we mean, she did maim a man after all – she continued: ‘I’ve never told this story on television ever in my life!’
‘You cut off a piece of his ear?’ Fallon clarified, speaking for all of his viewers.
‘Yeah, I actually saw it fall,’ she said.
Don’t worry though, despite seeing a piece of her friend’s flesh fall from his body, Winslet insists it wasn’t too big a deal.
‘It was a little nick, it wasn’t like a chunk,’ she defended herself. ‘It was very upsetting, I was traumatised.’
Although, not traumatised enough not to go looking for the ‘missing bit’, apparently. And, luckily, it seems the family friend bore no hard feelings, with Kate revealing he sees it as his ‘claim to fame’.
Well, we guess if you’ve got to get your ear cut off by anyone, it may as well be a Hollywood superstar.
Luckily for everyone, Winslet’s acting career did take off (we know, that’s a bit of an understatement) and we can all next see her in survival romantic drama The Mountain Between Us when it’s released next month.
Maybe just let other people do the hair styling in future though, alright Kate?
