Colin Firth’s wife Livia Giuggioli has admitted to an affair with a man she has accused of stalking her.
The Italian film producer, 48, and Firth, 57, confirmed the affair took place in a statement provided to USA TODAY by Firth’s representative Luke Windsor Friday, but claimed journalist Marco Brancaccia continued to harass Giuggioli with a “frightening campaign” of messages after the affair had ended. British newspaper The Times was the first to report the confirmation of the affair.
“A few years ago Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate. During that time, Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited,” the statement, sent by Windsor on the couple’s behalf, read. “Subsequently, Mr. Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented.”
Brancaccia, 55, has denied the stalking claims, telling The Times Giuggioli invented them to cover up the affair, which lasted from 2015 to 2016.
“We were romantically involved, she wanted to leave Colin for me,” he told the Times. “My ‘stalking’ consisted of two messages via WhatsApp after she ended our relationship in June 2016, and an email.”
He continued, “I wrote an email to Colin about my relationship with Livia, which I now regret sending, and she filed a complaint against me for stalking out of fear that I could go public with what she had revealed to me about her marriage and work. In a year she sent me hundreds of messages of love, photos and videos, even a diary.”
Giuggioli married the Oscar-winning actor in 1997. They have two sons together, Luca and Matteo.
Firth won an Oscar for best actor in a leading role in 2011 for his role as King George VI in The King’s Speech. He also won a Golden Globe and BAFTA Film Award for his royal portrayal. In 2010, he was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for his role in A Single Man, in which he starred alongside Julianne Moore and Nicholas Hoult.
Other notable performances include the popular 2003 Christmas film Love Actually as well as his recurring role as Mark Darcy in the Bridget Jones’s Diary franchise.
Before his marriage, Firth had a five year relationship with American-Canadian actress Meg Tilly, which lasted from 1989 to 1994. The couple have a son, Will Firth, 27.
