Duncan Robb thought he had Valentine’s Day in the bag. He’d scored a pair of great seats at an amazing price to see his girlfriend’s favorite band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in Belfast on Feb. 10.
As it turns out, he did have it in the bag — just not quite the bag he expected. Much to Robb’s surprise, he realized he’d accidentally bought tickets to see the Red Hot ChiliPipers — who are billed as “the most famous bagpipe band on the planet ever,” according to the group’s website.
Apparently, Robb’s girlfriend discovered what was up when she decided a few days before the concert to research who was opening for the band. Unable to find any information about the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing in Belfast that Saturday, the couple realized their hot date was going to be … well, a bit of a blowout.
What to do? The couple decided to fly to Belfast anyway and check out the Pipers. After all, Robb was already out £30 ($41) for the tickets, so why not?
Still can’t believe we’ve flown over to Belfast not for the @ChiliPeppers but to see the ‘worlds best bagpipe band’ @chillipipers … thought I’d got a rate good deal on tickets n’all. Had a nightmare pic.twitter.com/YO72amVR4I

“Still can’t believe we’ve flown over to Belfast not for the @ChiliPeppers but to see the ‘worlds best bagpipe band’ @chillipipers … thought I’d got a rate good deal on tickets n’all,” griped Robb on Twitter, along with several screenshots of expletive-filled text conversations about the mistake.
As it turned out, the couple had a fun time after all. However, according to Newsweek, the Red Hot Chilli Piper’s agent, Douglas Gillespie, said that this wasn’t the first time someone mistook the bagpipes band for the better-known arena act.
“We’re always extremely careful in all advertising,” Gillespie said. “We’ve made sure to put kits and bagpipes on all the pictures. We would never ever try to pass ourselves off as the Red Hot Chili Peppers; we respect them too much.”
