New set photos from IT Chapter Two see Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise the Clown getting down and dirty in a scary swamp. The follow-up to last year’s blockbuster IT, the second chapter picks up the story 27 years later as the now-adult members of the Losers’ Club are called back to Derry to once again face the monster that haunted their childhoods.
Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader head-up the cast of IT Chapter Two, together with a returning Skarsgård as the ancient evil Pennywise, who disguises himself as a terrifying clown in order to lure his innocent victims. The movie will also include flashbacks featuring the adolescent versions of the Losers’ Club from the first IT. Adapted from Stephen King’s massive 1986 novel, the first chapter of IT grossed an astounding $700 million worldwide, touching off a gold rush of planned King adaptations.
The second half of IT is currently in production, and new photos from the set show that things will definitely get dirty in the sequel. Just Jared has posted a series of leaked images showing Skarsgård in his now-iconic Pennywise the Clown makeup and costume filming a scene in a boggy area filled with muck. What exactly is going on in the scene is anyone’s guess, but Skarsgård’s Pennywise definitely cuts a bizarre figure amid all the mud and vegetation. See all the images here. Of course, any time photos leak from the set of IT Chapter Two, fans immediately start searching them for clues about what scenes from the book Andy Muschietti might be bringing to life. These new images of Skarsgård as Pennywise don’t seem to give away anything specific, though hardcore IT fans might be able to read something into them. Thanks to a previous leaked set photo, fans have gotten a strong hint that Chapter Two will feature a classic scene from the book where a Paul Bunyan statue comes to life and chases the youthful version of Richie Tozier.
Naturally, everyone involved in making IT Chapter Two is playing it close to the vest in order to avoid spoilers. Writer Gary Dauberman did however offer fans at least a little taste of what’s coming, saying in an interview that the movie’s ending will “satisfy the audience and maybe break their hearts a little bit.” Dauberman also revealed that the IT sequel will feature The Ritual of Chüd, one of the more infamous and bizarre sequences from the original book.
