Ah well, I can’t hide my disappointment. Julia Roberts has announced that she will not appear in the second season of “Homecoming,” the excellent series adapted from the Gimlet podcast.
The drama, from Sam Esmail of “Mr. Robot,” was given two seasons right off the bat from Amazon. But Roberts signed on for only one of them, and she has decided to let that be her last. Too bad: She was a great part of the season, as it built into a twisty thriller about healing war veterans. She was low-key enough to remain fascinating for all 10 episodes, and she explored places darker than she usually does in the movies.
I assumed season two would continue the relationship between Roberts’s Heidi and Stephan James’s Walter Cruz, which had some indefinable but possibly romantic potential. Most likely, it will instead pursue the story line teased in the season one finale after the credits, featuring Colin (Bobby Cannavale) and his new boss, Audrey Temple (Hong Chau). But there’s no official word yet on whether the other cast members, including James, Cannavale, Shea Whigham, Alex Karpovsky, and Sissy Spacek, will return.
