Star Wars is getting animated in Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures, a new series of shorts that will relive classic moments from the beloved franchise. Originally created by George Lucas, the science-fiction fantasy saga first hit screens back in 1977 with A New Hope. That was followed by The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The trilogy proved to be a cultural phenomenon, amassing a passionate following. It later spawned a series of hugely popular animated shows, a collection of expanded universe books, and a much-maligned prequel trilogy.
After Lucas sold the rights to Disney, fans finally got their wish to see what ultimately became of their favorite space-faring heroes. Unfortunately, the latest installments have mostly served to divide fans. Whilst Force Awakens shattered records, it was considered something of a retread. Despite glowing reviews, The Last Jedi provoked a rabid response from numerous fans regarding, among other things, the depiction of Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile, Solo: A Star Wars Storyproved to be the franchise’s first flop. Things aren’t without hope, however. Outside of such upcoming television series as The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm has scaled back on their anthology and expanded universe stories, instead focusing on Episode IX and returning the saga to its roots.
A step in that direction is the announcement from Star Wars Kids that Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures will explore the classic themes, pivotal moments and iconic characters from the Star Wars saga. The collection of animated shorts will debut on the brand new Star Wars Kids website and Youtube channel, which has already released the first official trailer. Check that out below, followed by the official poster for the series.
The first 6 episodes are set to be released on November 30, with additional shorts being released in December, and then weekly in 2019. Combined with mixed media educational pieces, the shorts are intended to help introduce a galaxy far, far away to a whole new generation. As well as that, Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures will serve as the beginning of a year-long celebration that will culminate with the release of Episode IX.
Although the series is set to explore the entire saga, the trailer has focused heavily on the original trilogy, featuring such iconic moments as Luke first receiving his lightsaber, the destruction of the first Death Star, and Leia’s face off with Darth Vader. It’s unsurprising that the creators have chosen to look to the past and where it all began. Not only is nostalgia proving to be a major component of entertainment right now, but Episode IX is set to be the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, and therefore the end of an era. As such, it’s the perfect time for new fans to educate themselves as to the decades’ worth of context and build-up the franchise has produced, and for old fans to look back and reflect on the world and characters to which they have adoringly dedicated so much of their lives.
